Nikon D40@6mp Rocks !
Last week I landed anow discontinued, Nikon D40 ( 6Megapixels only) for my friend. I got a great deal on it at Wing Shing Photo, Mongkok, Hongkong. Wing Shing & Man Shing, both sister concerns and are few of the recommended authorised Nikon dealers in Hongkong . The camera came with the kit lens which is a 18-55 G lens . I took it with me to Pavna to our regular paragliding spot. The pics from this mini “low end” beginner SLR are super right out of the box ! I set Optimise image to +1 Sharpening, +1 Saturation and the camera on Aperture priority. The pics are just WOW. For a beginner or even a pro, this is one very capable camera. Yes the AF is a little slow and the burst rate is not much but, the quality is just as good as from any pro Nikon, especially if you can shoot RAW and process. The Jpegs are no slouch either and I absolutely loved shooting some people shots for a change. Teh download on to the comp of the 6mp files is a very welcome breeze
I am hoping Nikon keeps a 6MP in its line up. Most times I probably wouldn’t need anything more than 6MP for casual family and people shots.
Foram had a swank 60xx series Flytec vario and a Garmin all brand new of course ! Dang.! Need to get some of those kool aero gizmos !

On to paragliding…got my first flight and that too a 30 minutes ridge soaring flight this season .While I did my “beats” above a Black Shouldered Kite and a Kestrel were hovering a few hundred feet below me. Awesome ! Awesome ! Awesome !. Finally my airtime account is now open for the season 2007-2008 ….Yippeee!!! Manju too was much more comfy in the air. So its two flights for her this season and one for me
Felt really super to get back into the air

Finally we moved our backsides and went for this season’s first paragliding trip. Had to work the the skills back and we spent the larger part of the Friday and Saturday of this Easter weekend on ground training with our usual Templepilots gang. Manju managed a top down quick flight and managed her first plan and a standup landing. Woohoo ! Way to go babes !!!
The winds were not too good so, I decided to stick with the “kiting” practice. Avi handed me a mean competition wing and, boy isnt that a fast sucker ! Responds to the smallest inputs. I am gonna master that guy in time. At least this time around I was able to reverse kite and get the canopy up and keep it there for a few seconds. The winds were really iffy and that didn’t help one bit either. But on the whole, Yippee ! Ggooood to get the paraglide feel once again !
So much for Paragliding. I did carry my gear along and shot off a few of the folks in their Holi colours and of Foram doin her thing with her new Windtech “Zephyr” wing. I thought that spiderman like logo in the centre of “her kite” was uber cool !

I shot manual exposure after reading the histogram since I was mostly shooting against the light. Worked pretty well I thought
